The Promise of Ningxia Wine
Helan Mountain was established just 27 years ago in 1998 and quickly began growing and expanding into one of the region’s most well-favoured wineries. This state-owned brand prides itself on their awarded product line-up and the unforgettable experience of visiting their winery. The estate is graced with traditional Chinese architecture and towering statues of barrels lining the way to the large amphitheatre where guests are treated to thematic performances describing the history, culture, and potential of Ningxia wine. The wines themselves confirm the incredible pride and potential of East Helan Mountain Foothill wines. The line up included not only a standout wine from He Lan Hong Winery, but Pernord Ricard Ningxia Winemakers, Lilan Winery and Holansoul Winery. The Italian Riesling 2022 from Helan Hong Winery was a dry, crisp and balanced wine with supple acidity and distinct aromas of citrus and green pears. Helan Mountain Classic Dry White 2021 was a standout among the line-up, reminiscent of a classic French Chablis: fresh, crisp, robust with flavours of citrus, white peach and white flowers balanced with a refreshing minerality that gives this wine an added complexity. The line-up also featured a Bordeaux-style red cuvee by Lilan Winery – the Lancui Grand Cru dry red 2017. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blend was a refreshing continuation of the sensual journey to France as its was an amicable copy of some of the French region’s most typical reds. The unique terroir of Ningxia, however, still shows though in the wine, making it an impressive feat of winemaking. The same can be said of the second standout of the night – the Holansoul Winery Organic Syrah 2014. This aged beauty was served alongside traditionally prepared roasted lamb with spices which complimented it perfectly. More than 10 years old now, this wine perfectly holds its structure: ripe tannins, strong body, length and long finish, with flavours of ripe red fruits and spices. Each of the wines were paired with specific canapés that brought out each of their most interesting characteristics. What followed was a multiple-course dinner with impeccably prepare dishes and top-of-the-line service.
I find it quite hard to sum up my impressions and thoughts on Helan Mountain Winery and the Ningxia wine region. It is a region that shows so much promise and potential, it is in rapid development and eager to prove itself as one of the wine world’s top-quality wine-producing lands. And, from what I’ve experienced, it definitely comes across as experienced, equipped and ready to take on the world.
