An in-depth journey through the rich tradition of Montenegrin viticulture " We knew that we were entering into a pioneering but necessary endeavor that required vision, dedication, expertise and thoroughness. Viticulture and winemaking are not just economic activities, but are deeply intertwined in identity, tradition, language and art. They represent a combination of nature and culture, knowledge and skills, science and spirituality " - said Prof. Dr. Vesna Marash, editor-in-chief of the Lexicon of Viticulture and Winemaking in Montenegro, at today's promotion at the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts (CANU).
Experts from the fields of viticulture, winemaking, biology, history, culture, linguistics and tourism worked on the Lexicon, which contains 549 terms. Special importance is given to the historical context, starting from the ancient period, through the Middle Ages to the modern era. Autochthonous and domesticated varieties were identified and documented through field observations and genetic research. The lexicon also gave space to contemporary producers, including 313 registered winegrowers and 88 wineries, 80 of which were specially presented through text and illustrations. Associate Professor Sanja Radonjic emphasized that 41 authors from various fields participated in this project, and that field research was of particular importance.
